In this DLGuard review, I provide a synopsis of 30 months writing ebooks and selling them as digital downloads using the DLGuard software. In particular, the products download link administration & protection is a key factor in the products success.
I installed DLGuard over two years ago to distribute PDF ebooks and some software applications online from my own website. The product is in essence a set of scripts that provide all the standard shopping cart & checkout functionality. This includes handling multiple products, discount coupons and interfacing with several third payment processors during the checkout stage.
Where DLGuard comes into its own is after payment has been confirmed. The product is able to automate sending out emails to customers with a unique download link for their purchase (i.e. no intervention is needed by the webmaster). More critically, it is able to secure the link from being shared by configuring a validity period for the link, as well as restricting the number of attempts that can be made to download the product. These settings are configurable to suit your website needs.
The products scripts are customizable by anyone with coding skills. Many users choose to refactor the checkout pages with the same page design as their website.
One key setback I experienced was the license limitation which restricts the product installation to 2 domains. Rather than purchase extra licenses (say if you are only running mini-sites) it is possible to work around this by having a single server for processing sales which your other sites redirect to. However, with this work around your checkout pages would have the same design across all yours sites.
DLGuard has proven itself to be a secure way of automating digital sales on websites for many users, including my own. While it may lack some of the functionality of enterprise products it is still a very usable product and best suited to web entrepreneurs on a small scale that have high traffic websites.
