Will Touch Screen Computers Catch On?

When personal computers first came out in the early eighties, there’s no question that they were clunky and slow.  At that point the only tool for data entry was a keyboard.  A few years later Macintosh introduced the computer mouse.  The computer mouse made it possible for data input or data selections to be done in an entirely new way.  A way that no one had ever experienced before.  With the invention of this simple device, the computing industry changed forever.  As wonderful as this invention one was, it wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms amongst all computer users.  There were many people who held out and many software developers took their sweet time updating their software to support the use of a mouse.   For a long time, some software programs supported the mouse while others didn’t.  It was sort of an awkward time for those of us who embraced the use of a mouse.

Now that more and more manufacturers are including touch screens on their computers, we’re in the same situation as we were in when the computer mouse was invented.  Some people are embracing it while others are holding off.  Many people think that it’s a fad that won’t catch on.  Others think that it’s just a matter of time before all computers are equipped with Touch screens.

Touch screens our most popular on portable electronic devices like ipods and iphones.  These devices are actually paving the way for touch screens to be installed on all computers.  These devices have a educated the world on how fun and practical it can be to make data input selections be via touch screen.  Making selections on a device with a touch screen has gone from a chore to a fun activity.   There’s no doubt that it will take some time for the masses to realize how valuable and productive touch screens can be.  Based upon looking at history and that process of acceptance that the computer mouse went through, it seems likely that the touchscreens will someday be accepted and found on most, if not all comuters.  Touch screen laptop computers are leading the way for this to happen as we speak.
